Fort Point Trail Construction and Bridge Design-Build

St. George

Fort Point is the site of an historic fort located on a scenic, windswept peninsula that juts into the St. George River. The land provides the only public access point to the waterway and serves as a drain for the surrounding landscape including a popular artesian spring located at the trailhead.

Kennebec Trail Company was awarded the contract for construction of 2,400 feet of universally accessible trail including 300 feet of boardwalk. The scope of work was expanded to include layout and construction of an additional 1,200 feet of trail, forming a lollipop route around the fort site. In addition, Kennebec Trails was invited to submit a proposal for a trail bridge, and received that award as well for its design of a 48-foot cedar-decked structure with split block granite stone abutments engineered to withstand the demands not just of pedestrian foot traffic, but of the machine-built accessible trail construction process.
